Planning application submitted for the Mayfair Cinema to be restored to its former glory

With the aim to create an unforgettable cinematic experience, a planning application to restore the Mayfair Cinema to its former glory has now been submitted to Westminster City Council.

Since November 2021, 38 Curzon Lease Ltd has actively engaged with and garnered the opinion of the local community, elected representatives, industry stakeholders and industry and technology experts on its proposals for the Mayfair Cinema.

The feedback gathered during the planning process in particular through the consultation process has been invaluable in shaping the development of the scheme. Through a comprehensive analysis of this feedback, in conjunction with additional technical and experience research and evaluation, we have been able to refine and enhance our proposed Cinema plans in several significant ways. By carefully considering input from all, as well as taking into account our design, artistic, entertainment and commercial goals, we have made the decision to maintain a second screen within the Cinema.

Retaining a second screen aligns with our holistic approach to delivering an exceptional cinematic experience, further solidifying our commitment to meeting the expectations of our diverse audience while upholding the highest quality standards. This will provide patrons and moviegoers with increased choice not just in films to watch but the environment to watch them in as each auditorium will have its own individual design, programming, food offering and technological viewing experience.

The vision for The Mayfair Cinema combines the best of technology with the best of hospitality in an extremely flexible configuration that will allow it to deliver an exceptional breadth of content and events as the cinema landscape evolves. The choice of luxury seating types will allow customers to choose the experience they want at a range of ticket prices. Accessibility will be vastly improved with step-free access and other facilities, so less able customers can take full advantage of the experience on offer. The venue will, once again, become a real landmark in London, sought out by film buffs and tourists alike, whilst having the flexibility, remit, and sound commercial footing to offer an increased breadth of content to local residents, keeping them visiting regularly.

The architecturally stunning cinema will see a £15 million investment, which will see it carefully revived and reinstated as London’s go-to cinema experience for film-lovers and film directors alike.

The team behind the exciting project have already proven their credentials and breathed life back into The Ned London and House of KOKO Camden. Now we have our visionary sights on the resurgence of one of London’s iconic Grade II listed buildings.

Dan Zaum, CEO of 38 Curzon Lease Ltd, said:

“We are moving another step toward restoring the Mayfair Cinema to its former glory. Our planning application has been submitted to Westminster City Council following a 2 year consultation with residents and community, industry stakeholders, technology and design experts etc.

“We are passionate about creating London’s ultimate cinema experience and wish to disrupt the offering in the current market. The Mayfair Cinema will always have film at its heart – and will become a vibrant venue serving the wider community, creatively, socially, educationally, and beyond.

Back in the 1930’s when this cinema was first built, elements such as accessibility, affordability and energy efficiency weren’t a concern. We now have the opportunity to consciously upgrade the workings of this venue for the enjoyment of everyone, whilst maintaining the prestige and beauty of its original features and façade. Throughout our engagement we have maintained our commitment to the delivery of the Mayfair Cinema.. Only we, the landlord, can unite the cinema with the restaurant, providing patrons an enhanced ‘night out’ of a cinema experience, beyond the screening time.”

Morris Bright MBE, Chair – Elstree Film Studios Ltd

“As Chair of Elstree Studios – the home to this country’s first talking picture, Hitchcock’s Blackmail in 1929, the original Star Wars and Indiana Jones trilogy and more recently The King’s Speech as well as high-end award-winning dramas such as The Crown - I am pleased to offer my support to this project.

This is an exciting time for film and for venues that can broadcast at affordable prices theatre shows and concerts which many may not have access to due to cost, and I believe the Mayfair Curzon will be at the forefront of the next stage of evolution for the cinema going and film watching experiences.”

The Mayfair Cinema enhancements are being curated using a restorative framework in keeping with the concept of a circular economy and minimising impact, reintroducing natural light to lower energy consumption, reinstating the existing materials.

Spread across three floors, including an in-house restaurant, fully stocked bar and auditorium table service in a nod to the luxury experience of retro cinema, the Mayfair Cinema plans to be a low waste operation. The offering has evolved to meet the expectations for the changing film goers and to meet and exceed what others are already doing in their theatres. From the suppliers utilised, to the way the dishes are washed, British produce will be championed, small-scale local farmers favoured, and sustainably produced ingredients featured throughout the menus.

With an injection of world-class audio-visual tech, an exquisite food offering and vibrant programme of films and events that promise to inspire and provoke, The Mayfair Cinema will be a must-visit destination for film-aficionados, foodies, families and more.
